Many people in Hanoi don’t know where to go on the weekend. Cuồng Du Lịch suggests places to visit near Hanoi for you to explore this weekend. Make sure to note down these 7 places to visit near the center of Hanoi to plan for this weekend.

1. Núi Hàm Lợn

Where is Núi Hàm Lợn located?

Núi Hàm Lợn is located in Sóc Sơn district, Hanoi. This place is known as the “roof of the capital” with an altitude of 462m. The surrounding area of the mountain offers beautiful landscapes for visitors to admire and explore. At the foot of Núi Hàm Lợn, there is a large and clean lake called Núi Bàu (Hồ Hàm Lợn). The most beautiful scenery is in the morning when the mist covers the lake like gentle smoke. As the sun sets, the whole scene with the sun shrinking into the lake is peaceful and serene.

Núi Hàm Lợn is about 40km from the city center of Hanoi via the Bac Thang Long – Noi Bai expressway, making it easily accessible. You can drive here with your own vehicle like a motorbike. To ensure a safe and convenient trip to Núi Hàm Lợn, it is recommended to avoid carrying bulky items like tents and tarps. When you arrive at Núi Hàm Lợn, there are many places to rent tents for camping, tarps, camping stoves, and other camping equipment. The typical itinerary for exploring Hàm Lợn usually goes as follows:

Hiking up Núi Hàm Lợn.

Camping at Hồ Hàm Lợn (Hồ Suối Bàu) and staying overnight here.

If you choose to hike Núi Hàm Lợn, you can opt for one of the following two routes:

  1. Hiking Núi Hàm Lợn via the trail: This is a safe path with less undergrowth, commonly used by many to save time climbing to the summit. Starting from the base of the mountain, it will take you about 2 to 2.5 hours to reach the summit.
  2. Hiking Núi Hàm Lợn through the forest, streams: This route is suitable for those who enjoy adventurous experiences. You will need double the time compared to the trail, about 3 – 4 hours trekking along streams and through dense vegetation, small cliffs, and boulders to reach the summit.

Note: Although this mountain hiking route is quite dangerous, it attracts many young people who want to conquer the summit through the forest and streams. However, this route is only suitable during the dry season and should be avoided during the rainy, wet season as the forest paths and slippery rocks can be very dangerous.

Camping overnight at Hồ Hàm Lợn (Hồ Suối Bàu)

Hồ Suối Bàu is a beautiful and spacious lake, offering a refreshing and clean atmosphere, perfect for camping and overnight stays. With ample space, you can enjoy playing, camping, lighting campfires, and cooking food here.

Moreover, you can also swim in the lake’s water, knowing that it is clean and clear.

2.  Núi Trầm

Núi Trầm is located in Phụng Châu commune, Chương Mỹ district, Hanoi (about 25km from the lake – almost within the city). Chùa Trầm is at the foot of Núi Trầm, and nearby is Chùa Trăm gian (about 3km from Chùa Trầm).

Directions to Núi Trầm

I traveled by motorbike. However, based on my observation, you can easily drive a car here as the route is very convenient (mostly on national highways and expressways). It is suitable for new drivers who want to take their family or friends for a weekend trip and practice driving.

>>>> See more: Guide to Núi Trầm in Hanoi

– Route: You can search on Google with the keyword “Núi Trầm” for detailed directions. Basically, there are 2 routes to get there: National Highway 6 and Thang Long Avenue. You can take either of these routes. Personally, I chose to take Le Van Luong – To Huu when I went because I passed through Van Phuc silk village on the way (I didn’t include it in the article as it didn’t leave much of an impression on me), then I went out to Yen Nghia Embankment to National Highway 6. All the roads were picturesque to me. When you reach National Highway 6, go straight, when you see the Chương Mỹ District Party Committee (on the left), turn right at the opposite alley and go straight into the village. On the way back, I drove around Chương Mỹ district, past Chùa Trăm Gian and out to Thang Long Avenue (also through another embankment).

Núi Trầm Travel Itinerary

– I left home around 9 am, had a leisurely breakfast and checked in, but by 10:15 am, I was already parking my bike at Tram Pagoda. However, I recommend going early to avoid the midday sun when climbing the mountain.

– Upon arrival, head straight to Tram Pagoda (passing a very large banyan tree in the middle of the road) and park your bike in the temple courtyard or at a few nearby stalls. The parking fee is always only 5,000 VND/bike, but I recommend parking outside as the price remains the same, and you will receive very enthusiastic help from the local villagers, plus my parents taught me not to ride bikes into temples.

– Tram Pagoda consists of 3 main areas: a mother worship area on the right, a Buddha cave with many stone sculptures inside the cave in front, and a worship area on the left with a spacious courtyard. The temple is crowded on the full moon days of January, February 2nd, March 3rd, and August 20th of the lunar calendar, but when I visited, it was quite peaceful and suitable for temple visits.

Tram Pagoda is first and foremost a historical relic, as the first call for national resistance was made from here. In addition, the cave area is very interesting, with stone carvings, sunlight filtering through, etc… you can see more in my photos. Very interesting. I felt extremely comfortable in the temple.

– After that, head to the Tram Mountain complex, which includes about 6-7 “quả” (local term for peaks). Climbing the mountain here is measured in “quả” because when you descend, everyone will ask you how many “quả” you reached. The mountain is not high, so if you exercise regularly, you may not even need to catch your breath. The interesting thing here is that there are many paths to reach a peak, no established trails, you have to climb and help each other, which is very fun. When you reach the top, there are rice fields behind you, and in front of you is a mountain like a plateau in a great American movie. There are many rocky outcrops, many peaks for you to take photos that couldn’t be more beautiful.

I climbed to the top of the mountain and had a prepared meal (and a beer, of course, very enjoyable). But many groups of friends prepare food and have BBQ grills, there are many rock crevices to escape the sun and grill, very romantic. This area is special because there is no litter, no signs, no commercial activities, so even though it’s crowded, it feels very comfortable, primitive. Climbing the mountain doesn’t require too much physical effort and the photo opportunities are beautiful.

I went down to a drink stall near the parking lot to rest and chat, and asked about the area. The prices are very reasonable, no overcharging, and the stall owners are very friendly, which I really liked.

– Then I went to Tram Gian Pagoda (about 3km away). When I reached Huong Trinh rice restaurant, I turned in to park my bike (5,000 VND/bike). I was impressed by this area because it is spacious, with beautiful pine forests like in Europe, a lake, a temple courtyard… in general, there are many beautiful spots. I went here quickly because there weren’t many people around at noon.

– On the way back to Thang Long Avenue, I turned into Tan Hoa commune (known for making conical hats…), and then looped through the villages, which was very interesting. In general, it’s a way to explore without getting lost if you wander.

– Head back on Thang Long Avenue

3. Ba Vi National Park

Located about 50 km to the west, it only takes about 2 hours to reach Ba Vi National Park. Just go without much hesitation. This is the best time to visit and take photos, as this is when the wild sunflowers “in legend” bloom abundantly, perfect for some Instagram-worthy shots.

The entrance fee for adults is 60k, for students it’s only 20k.

To fully enjoy the interesting things along the way, it’s best to go by motorbike, with trees providing shade on both sides, cool air, it’s really comfortable.

PS: If you go by car, make sure to use a 29s car maximum

Guide to visiting Ba Vi National Park

The first stop we made was at the pine hill, around 9:00 in the morning, when the sun began to shine gently, my two friends and I enjoyed taking cool videos and deep photos.

After having fun at the pine hill, we continued our journey of exploration. As we went higher, the road became more winding and the air felt colder. We stopped at the dragon fruit garden, where it is said that there are up to 1,200 dragon fruit varieties planted, and if anyone accidentally breaks a branch, they have to pay a fine of 200k.

The next stop was the ancient temple, which we were most looking forward to as we had heard a lot about it but hadn’t had the chance to visit. Before entering the temple, we had to climb a very steep slope, so be careful. Upon entering the temple, the first thing we felt was a slightly eerie atmosphere, quiet and a bit gloomy, truly ancient and mysterious, but equally fascinating.

And finally, we reached the Upper Temple, which was quite an interesting challenge. The Upper Temple is located at the summit of Ba Vi mountain at an altitude of 1,227 meters. To reach the Upper Temple, we had to climb about 500 steps. But rest assured, the view from the top will not disappoint. The green of the mountains blending with the blue of the sky, the blue of the hidden rivers and lakes behind the white clouds flying by, overall it was incredibly beautiful.

If you have the time and energy, you can also conquer the Ho Chi Minh Temple with a similar view, it’s just as stunning.

That was the journey of my friends and I at Ba Vi National Park.

5. Duong Lam Ancient Village

Duong Lam Ancient Village

Address: Xom He, Mong Phu Hamlet, Duong Lam Commune, Son Tay, Hanoi

These are real experiences from someone born and raised in Saigon with a strong love for Hanoi.

It can be said that I classify myself as a unique individual when choosing to review differently from others, always curious, exploring deeply, my personality and writing style do not match any review site, liking what I like, criticizing what I don’t like, without any self-promotion.

dia-diem-du-lich-gan-ha-noi-1

Returning to the issue, to know if what I’m saying is correct or not, please read on below. I write what I like, whether you believe it or not is up to you. There are many articles online guiding, reviewing about walking, eating, and staying in Duong Lam, but 99% of them are old articles, information not updated, the writers did not focus on other aspects besides just the way to go, eat, and drink.

Briefly about Duong Lam ancient village, Duong Lam is about 37km from Hanoi, it can be said that this place is one of the ancient villages that still retains ancient architecture from ancient times to now. Many old Hanoi movies were filmed here. Here are 4 things you need to know when visiting Duong Lam (including a guide)

>>> See now: GUIDE to Visit Duong Lam Ancient Village in 1 Day [DUONG LAM ANCIENT VILLAGE]

Guide to Visit Duong Lam Ancient Village

Just follow the maps, if you go by motorbike it’s fast, but if you want to be healthy, then ride a bike with a cross-Vietnam team. The entrance fee is 20K/person, however, if you ride a bike and are persuasive, you might get the ticket for free ^^

What does Duong Lam Ancient Village have?

Briefly about the ancient village, you might think it’s a place made for tourism by the state, but in fact, it’s also where people live, some houses still retain ancient features, but many houses have lost their ancient features and have been built with cement walls like in the city ^^. You should visit some ancient houses to admire the ancient features here.

  • Mrs. Duong Thi Lan’s ancient house
  • Visit Mr. Nguyen Van Hung’s ancient house
  • Visit Mr. Ha Huu The’s house
  • Visit Mr. Ha Van Vinh’s ancient house
  •  Visit Mr. Ha Nguyen Huyen’s ancient house
  • Find Mrs. Ha Thi Dien’s ancient house

One of the hardest things for those who travel alone is not having anyone to take Instagram-worthy photos. This place will create beautiful, artistic photos if you know how to take them. You can’t take cool photos alone, you can’t keep asking others to take photos for you, and usually, the photos taken by others don’t match your intentions.

P/s: More importantly, you are not allowed to take photos at the gate of Mong Phu village, the photos online are taken sneakily, if you take photos, be careful when the guard is not around and take them quickly, or you might get scolded. You can take photos inside but not at the main gate, maybe that belongs to my spiritual belief.

Especially when you come here, you must sit and drink a cup of green tea from the old lady selling tea at the main gate. This is the encyclopedia of Vietnamese history from ancient times of Ngo Quyen to Ngo Dinh Diem, 10 years of history lessons summarized in just 10-15 minutes, don’t think the old lady doesn’t know anything, she knows about Nha Phuong dating Truong Giang, then Nguyen Cao Ky died on what day, Mrs. Mai Mai, mother of Ky Duyen MC died on what day too. Then who works in which ministry in this village, then Ho Ngoc Ha filmed Hoa Co May here, the whole Showbiz is in the old lady’s head. You can borrow the old lady’s map and take a picture, but I think you don’t need a map because looking at it, you won’t understand anything, because every house looks the same, after a while, you won’t know which way is which. Or you can ask the old lady for any information you need, she answers very warmly and lovely. Oh, she’s also from the North but the people here are very friendly, very enthusiastic guides, especially they highly value people from the South and beautiful… like me.

Guide to explore Duong Lam Ancient Village

– Transportation: motorbike or bicycle

– Food, drink: Have breakfast in Hanoi, when you arrive in Duong Lam, contact the old lady at the gate to order lunch. Or you can buy gifts at the shops in the village

– Time: Within a day

– Activities/Photos: As mentioned above, if you go alone, there’s no need to go because there’s no one to take photos, but if you want to go just for the experience, just bring a selfie stick to conquer all fronts. However, if you want beautiful, mesmerizing photos, you should go with another person.
