Should You Take a Speedboat or Ferry to Phú Quốc?
Choosing a method of travel depends on your preferences and needs. Here’s some info to help you decide:
- If departing from the same point, the high-speed boat is faster than the ferry: the Hà Tiên – Phú Quốc ferry takes 2h45, while the speedboat takes only 1h30.
- Ferries are slower but cause less seasickness and are more stable than speedboats.
- Ferries can carry motorbikes, goods, and cars, whereas speedboats only carry passengers and motorbikes.
- Ferry tickets are cheaper than speedboat tickets.
Should You Travel to Phú Quốc from Hà Tiên or Rạch Giá?
Choosing a departure port depends on your location and transportation. However, most travelers go from Hà Tiên to Phú Quốc for these reasons:
- It’s closer and faster: Hà Tiên to Phú Quốc is 40km and takes 1h30, while Rạch Giá to Phú Quốc is 120km and takes 2h30.
- It’s cheaper: Hà Tiên – Phú Quốc speedboat tickets are around 230,000 VND, while Rạch Giá – Phú Quốc is 320,000 VND.
- More departure options: While Rạch Giá routes usually offer 1–2 trips per day, Hà Tiên has more variety.
Can You Get to Phú Quốc by Sleeper Bus?
Technically yes, though it involves using water transport as mentioned earlier. You take a bus to Kiên Giang (Rạch Giá or Hà Tiên), then transfer to a boat or ferry to reach Phú Quốc. Taking the bus is a great travel option, as all provinces have sleeper buses to Kiên Giang. However, it’s recommended to use this method only if you’re in provinces near Kiên Giang. Once you arrive in Rạch Giá or Hà Tiên, you can buy boat tickets to Phú Quốc.
Hotel Booking in Phú Quốc
Phú Quốc is quite large, with hotels scattered from north to south. However, based on experience, it’s best to book a hotel near Dương Đông Town, the island’s center, for the following reasons:
- Convenient transportation: easy access to airport, ports, and tourist spots.
- No extra charges for tours or activities: many tour packages depart from Dương Đông, so staying there saves travel costs.
- Nightlife: In Dương Đông, you can enjoy cafes, night markets, dining, while other areas may have fewer options and require travel back to town.
- More services: Dương Đông offers a full range of services, from basic to luxury — dining, cafes, and various hotel options.
Depending on your preferences, you can also book hotels in other areas. Here are some areas with a high concentration of hotels in Phú Quốc:
- Dương Đông Town: The island’s center, bustling with a wide range of hotels.
- Ông Lang Beach: Located 20km north of Dương Đông, mainly caters to Western tourists seeking quiet retreats.
- Trường Beach: A newly developed, busy area with many luxury hotels like Novotel, Mường Thanh, Sonasea, Long Beach, etc., about 20km south of Dương Đông.
- Dài Beach: Around 40km from Dương Đông. This area mainly comprises Vinpearl’s resort projects, often referred to as the Vinpearl zone.
- Khem Beach Area: Located 25km from Dương Đông, this area is developed by Sunworld, featuring hotels like JW Marriott, Premier, etc.

Hon Thom (Hon Thom Cable Car): This is a cable car ride over the sea, takes about 20-25 minutes, quite long but because I sat admiring the scenery and taking photos, I didn’t feel it was long at all, the sea view is super beautiful everyone. Before taking the cable car, don’t forget to take photos outside An Thoi Station – the station before entering the cable car, designed in a beautiful ancient Greek style. The cable car ticket price when I went was 300K/person for a round trip. Remember to keep your ticket for the return trip. When you get off the cable car, an electric car will take you to the beach for free. Arriving at Hon Thom, oh the sun is shining, the sea is blue, the white sand, coconut trees stretching out, there are even some hammocks to chill in, swimming is also free, public clean bathrooms, even with air conditioning, very clean. Because I had a late breakfast, I only had some snacks for lunch here. But this place also has a buffet for 250k/person. I took lots of photos, swam, rested here and then bought a canoe tour to visit 4 islands at 2 pm. Price 450k/person, snorkeling to see coral reefs, canoeing was not as dizzy as I thought. Swimming outside the islands with clear water, snorkeling was also fun but be careful not to scratch your hands and feet while playing. Don’t forget to bring sunscreen. I played until about 4 pm, then watched the sunset, it was so beautiful.
Sao Beach
The first time I came here, I was super excited about this place because the water is incredibly clear, the only thing that fascinated me was the legendary swing that everyone takes pictures with for 20k/time. Here also offers services like paragliding, … You can go from the entrance of My Lan resort where there is free parking and changing area, or go straight to Sao Beach where there will be a parking fee. Both lead to Sao Beach because they are along the same coastline. If you have limited time and cannot visit all the spots, I recommend going to Hon Thom to swim, there is also a coconut tree swing, although not as beautiful, the water is clearer and there are more photo spots.

Vinpearl Safari
Entertainment and animal exploration area, if you are at Vinpearl, there will be no entrance fee, if you have playful children, they will probably enjoy coming here more, this place also has a few photo spots but mainly like Vinpearl land in other places. With Vinpearl Safari, you can watch animal performances, and also take an electric car to explore deep inside without having to walk because the area is quite large, but I found it quite expensive at 1.5 million VND/vehicle (max 7 people) so I didn’t go for further exploration and went to Vinpearl Land instead.

Bún Kèn
Bún Kèn is a unique dish that you can only find in Phú Quốc. The broth is made from dried fish, fish broth, coconut milk, curry powder, and cooked until they blend together. The dish is served with fresh vermicelli, fresh herbs like basil, coriander, sliced cucumber, bean sprouts, papaya, and a little sweet and sour fish sauce. The filling includes steamed fresh fish cake cooked by the broth in the bowl of vermicelli.
Bánh Canh Cá Thu
You can find fish cake noodle soup everywhere in Vietnam, but trying it in Phú Quốc during your trip will be different. Phú Quốc’s fish cake noodle soup is famous for its chewy, crispy fish cake made from mackerel and marinated richly. The locals in Phú Quốc make the broth from simmering mackerel bones, pork bones, and minced pork. Additionally, the noodle soup is made from rice flour, so its texture is chewy, soft, and will melt in your mouth. The dish is a perfect combination of the sweetness of the noodle soup, rich broth, delicious mackerel fish cake, spicy dipping sauce, black pepper, and fresh herbs.
Gỏi Cá Trích
Gỏi cá trích is an exquisite dish in Phú Quốc that you don’t want to miss. Grated coconut and sliced mullet fish are mixed with mint and onions, then wrapped in fresh herbs in rice paper and dipped in a special sauce. The sauce ingredients include finely chopped chili, garlic, scallions, roasted peanuts mixed with authentic Phú Quốc fish sauce to create a spicy but fragrant and unforgettable flavor. A tip to enhance the flavor of this dish is to squeeze lime juice on the fish.
Cầu Gai (Nhum)
Nhum is one of the many dishes to try in Phú Quốc and there are 3 common ways recommended by locals. First is to mince the meat inside, stir-fry with garlic, then simmer in porridge. Nhum porridge is rich, sweet, and nutritious for you.
The most common way is to cut the sea cucumber in half and grill it on hot charcoal and dip it in thick sauce, add onions, roasted peanuts. Then you use a spoon to mince the meat and dip it in a mixture of black pepper salt with lime juice, you will enjoy grilled sea cucumber.
Alternatively, you can also try eating raw sea cucumber with a few drops of lime juice or wasabi. Enjoying fresh sea cucumber this way will help you taste the freshness and attractive texture of this unique dish.
Bún Quậy
An unusual dish for diners. Bún quậy is not about stirring the noodles, but stirring the dipping sauce. Here, the dipping sauce is made only from tamarind, chili, spices, and almost no fish sauce. Whoever likes the dipping sauce to taste how they want. A bowl of bún quậy usually includes shrimp cake, and also mullet fish, so if you like to eat mullet fish, remember to specify. Why stir the dipping sauce?! Because simply, if there is no dipping sauce, this dish will be as bland as water
Cá Sòng Nướng
The most delicious way to enjoy grilled snakehead fish is to season it with salt, chili, and grill it on hot charcoal. To enjoy grilled snakehead fish, you wrap the meat in rice paper with fresh herbs and dip it in a sauce of fish sauce, lime, and chili. All create a sweet but not fishy taste, and the meat will melt in your mouth. Don’t miss the opportunity to try this Phú Quốc dish when traveling to the island because it’s not easy to find elsewhere.

Gợi ý lịch trình du lịch Phú Quốc tự túc
Many travelers ask how many days to spend in Phú Quốc or how long to travel to Phú Quốc. Typically, the longer you stay in Phú Quốc, the more time you have to explore and experience. However, if time is limited, travelers can visit Phú Quốc for 3 days 2 nights, 4 days 3 nights, or 2 days 1 night. Here are some suggestions for you and your family about Phú Quốc travel itinerary.
Phu Quoc 3 days 2 nights itinerary
We chose to go for 3 days and 2 nights instead of 4 days and 3 nights like most people, but we still managed to visit quite a few places. Our itinerary was as follows:
DAY 1: Check-in – Explore Rach Vem
- We flew at 6 am, arrived around 7 am. We took a taxi from the airport to The Palmy hotel for 100k, checked in, left our luggage at the hotel, and then rented a taxi for the whole day. The fee was 650k (you can rent a taxi near Bun Quay Kien Xay as we later found out it could be only 400k or 500k).
- We were hungry by then, so we tried the first dish, Bun Quay Kien Xay, right away. A large bowl costs 50k, a sugarcane juice costs 10k, a soft drink costs 15k. It was delicious, and the dipping sauce was unique. Make sure to check the sauce guide on the table for the right taste.
- After eating, we headed to Rach Vem. The road was rough, so if you’re on a motorbike, be careful! But it was worth it for some great photo opportunities. There are free changing rooms and a 20k fee for swimming. We rented 2 chairs and 1 umbrella with 4 coconuts for 450k. The beach was beautiful, perfect for photos and swimming until around 11 am.
- For lunch, our taxi driver recommended a seafood place near the area. The food was decent, but the shrimp wasn’t very fresh, costing around 900k.
- After lunch, around 1 pm, we went back to the hotel to check-in and rest.
- In the afternoon, we went to Ocsen. We left around 4 pm, took a taxi for a short 2km ride. Each person ordered a drink, and we had fun taking photos. The drinks cost around 50-70k each.
- By 6 pm, we took a taxi to the night market. The food there was expensive, unlike in Da Nang. We only bought dried squid, pastries, and alcohol for later. Our room was by the pool, so after drinking, we jumped in for a swim.
DAY 2: 5-Island Tour: Snorkeling – Hon Thom Cable Car
- In the morning, we took some photos at the hotel’s pool and had the hotel’s breakfast buffet.
- On the second day, we booked a tour to visit 5 islands for the whole day. The bus picked us up at the hotel around 8:30 am.
- Regarding the tour itinerary, you can find more information at: >>>>>. Overall, we found this tour worth it. If possible, bring your own food as the 8-course meal on the island wasn’t great. By not booking the meal, you can save 200k per person. The tour fee was 800k excluding meals.
- The tour also included a ticket to Sunset Sonato at 5 pm.
- In the evening, we were tired but still decided to go out.
- We had dinner at Bo To restaurant, and the seafood was delicious. The staff was friendly and attentive. After dinner, we went to Skye Bar PQ. It seemed more like a light bar where people enjoy drinks and music. Unfortunately, it wasn’t very lively, and we ended up spending 1.7 million VND.
DAY 3: Cafe – Dương Đông – Return
- Since it was our last day, we decided to relax a bit, have breakfast and then swim at the hotel beach. By noon, we checked out but left our luggage there. We took a taxi to have bánh canh chả cá Hạnh for lunch, a bowl for 45k with a lot of fish cakes.
- After eating, we went to Sơn Trà Hill to enjoy the view and pass the time. Due to going at noon, the sun was extremely harsh, couldn’t take any good photos. If possible, go in the afternoon to see the city at sunset, guaranteed to have super beautiful photos. You can also try the grilled coconut water here, the fruit is small but the water is plentiful and very fragrant.
- At 4pm, we followed two people we coincidentally met at the hotel to go eat chè nhà cổ. They praised the chè for its authentic Huế flavor, but we found it a bit too sweet. Then my silly friend insisted on having Bún Quậy for the second time. Really, it’s a unique dish so try it once just to know, the second time we were fed up, managed to eat a few bites.
- After that, we went back to the hotel, picked up our luggage and headed straight to the airport to go home, continuing the daily grind.
Total expenses for our group of 4 people including flights and hotels were over 6 million per person.

Phu Quoc 4 days 3 nights itinerary
Day 1: Suối Tranh – Hàm Ninh Fishing Village – Rạch Vẹm or Bãi Sao
- Upon arrival in Phu Quoc, quickly check in, have breakfast and visit Suối Tranh where the scenery is still quite pristine and the road is easy to travel as it is located on a main road.
- Have lunch at Hàm Ninh Fishing Village: the seafood here is very fresh and delicious, and the prices are quite reasonable for tourists. Also, the port bridge here is quite picturesque ^^
- Continue to Rạch Vẹm (recommended by the host as Bãi Sao is not beautiful due to trash this season). The road to here is a difficult red dirt road, no street lights so if you’re riding a motorbike, go early and return early. If you visit from the end of October to April, you may be lucky to check in at the place called the kingdom of starfish Rạch Vẹm, which is currently trending on the internet.
- Return to the homestay to freshen up, have Bún Quậy Kiến Xây for dinner, visit the Phu Quoc night market and take the opportunity to go to the supermarket or convenience store to buy dried food reserves for the night in case of hunger.
Day 2: Vinpearl Safari – Sky Bar INK 360
- Have breakfast, take the free bus to Vinpearl Safari (our group only went to Safari, when buying tickets for Safari or Vinpearland, the shuttle bus is included). It’s very spacious here so you can play all day.
- Freshen up and wear your best outfit to go to INK 360 at 5pm to admire the magnificent sunset in Phu Quoc. INK360 BAR is located in the luxurious Intercontinental Resort, the bar has a unique design resembling a white turtle :3. Also, this is the highest bar in Phu Quoc so even though it’s a bit expensive, it’s totally worth it!
- Price: around 300k/glass. (If there are 2 people, you should choose 1 drink and 1 fruit combo which is super reasonable and economical. Don’t order 2 drinks for 2 people if you’re not a pub enthusiast)
- Have dinner and return to the homestay to rest
Day 3: Hon Thom Bar Sunset Sanato
- Have breakfast and continue driving to An Thoi station to go to Hon Thom. You will experience the longest sea cable car in the world. The view from above is very beautiful and Hon Thom is also beautiful. (still under construction)
- Have lunch at Hon Thom. Don’t worry because the food prices are very reasonable. The Sunshine restaurant near the station offers dishes for 70k per portion, while the lunch buffet at the beach is 250k per person.
- Return to the homestay to freshen up and once again admire the sunset at Sunset, make sure to go a bit early to take beautiful sunset photos, I was a bit late that day :((( (entrance ticket 70k per person).
- Have dinner and rest early.
Day 4: Rest and return to Saigon
Have breakfast and check out to the airport in the afternoon to return to SG.
Phu Quoc 2 days 2 nights itinerary
Day 1: Ham Ninh – Dinh Cau – Bai Truong
- Boat departs from Ha Tien at 6 am, arrives at Phu Quoc at 7 am. At Phu Quoc pier, you can rent a motorbike as it is about 15km to the city center. Along the way, you can enjoy the surrounding scenery. It must be said that it is pristine but also very beautiful
- We arrived at the hotel around 9 am, then we moved to Ham Ninh fishing village. We took some check-in photos because there is a long road to the sea here. After taking photos, we went to a local restaurant for lunch. Seafood in Ham Ninh is very cheap (detailed review in each photo). We ate at Ha Quyen, the food was delicious, fresh, and the dining area facing the sea was very cool.
- After lunch, we returned to the hotel to rest and then moved to Dinh Cau and Bai Truong. Dinh Cau has a long road leading to the sea and many rocky crevices. You can come here in the afternoon to avoid the sun and take beautiful photos.
- Bai Truong, only 7km from the city center, has a Sanato bar, we bought entrance tickets for 70k.
- Since we arrived there at 5 pm, we couldn’t take many photos. You can admire the sunset here, it’s super beautiful. If you want to relax, this is a great place that I recommend
- Night market: There are many food options here, especially seafood. So, make sure to come hungry to try all the dishes.
Day 2: Ho Quoc Pagoda – Phu Quoc Prison – Phung Hung Fish Sauce – Sao Beach
- Ho Quoc Pagoda is 25km away from the town, so we woke up early and arrived at 8 am. This time is perfect for taking photos at the pagoda. The pagoda has a high view overlooking the sea with a statue of Quan Am on top. After visiting the pagoda, we returned to the town to have dessert at Che Nha Co. The dessert here is nothing special, but because it was highly reviewed, we decided to try it.
- At 2 pm, we visited Phu Quoc Prison. This is the most worthwhile place that you shouldn’t miss when visiting Phu Quoc. Next to the prison is Phung Hung Fish Sauce, where you can check in and see the fish sauce making process.
- At 4:30 pm, we arrived at Sao Beach. The beach here is beautiful, clear, but crowded, and the sunset is not as beautiful as in Sanato. However, this is still a must-visit place in Phu Quoc. The blue sea, clear water, and long white sandy beach. If you go to Sao Beach, you should go early to swim and return to the hotel early because the road to Sao Beach is very far and a bit dangerous.
Day 3: We booked a ferry ticket for 8 am, so we woke up to watch the sunrise and headed to the ferry
In addition to the beautiful natural scenery and special dishes, Phu Quoc Island also offers many interesting activities that will broaden your horizons when traveling here. Spend more time exploring Phu Quoc, and you will surely not regret traveling to Phu Quoc at least once in your lifetime.
