What is Tháp Nước Hàng Đậu?

Tháp Nước Hàng Đậu is a water supply structure for the residents of Hanoi dating back to the French colonial period. The structure was built at the intersection of Hàng Đậu, Quán Thánh, Hàng Than, Hàng Lược, Hàng Giấy, and Phan Đình Phùng streets. Due to its architecture resembling a watchtower, many people mistakenly call it the “Hàng Đậu Tower,” and the name “Bốt Hàng Đậu” has become familiar since then.

Tháp Nước Hàng Đậu, a structure built in 1894, predating the Long Biên Bridge, is located at the intersection of the ancient streets of Hàng Than, Hàng Lược, Hàng Giấy, Hàng Đậu, Quán Thánh, and Phan Đình Phùng.

What does Tháp Nước Hàng Đậu offer?

The walls of this structure are made of rough stone, with iron braces, arched windows, and a tin roof of a tower reaching 25 meters high to the top, giving a heavy and mysterious prison-like feeling.

However, it is actually a water tower (chateau-d’eau) in the structure of the urban water supply system built at the end of the 19th century. Perhaps because the main road from the Doumer Bridge (Long Biên) leads directly to the ancient city where the French military was stationed and the headquarters of the ruling machine, people are accustomed to calling it the “Tháp Nước Hàng Đậu.”

Where is Tháp Nước Hàng Đậu located?

The tower is situated at the center of 6 streets: Hàng Cót, Phan Đình Phùng, Hàng Đậu, Hàng Giấy, Quán Thánh, and Hàng Than. It also borders a flower garden called Vạn Xuân (commonly known as Hàng Đậu Flower Garden).

Tháp Nước Hàng Đậu, also known as Bốt Hàng Đậu, is an architectural structure with an impressive lifespan: 116 years, spanning three centuries – XIX, XX, and XXI.
