When visiting this famous Vũng Tàu tourist spot, tourists not only feel the thrill of conquering the high mountain peak but also experience a refreshing spirit when standing at the outstretched arms’ hand, gazing at the beautiful panoramic view of Vũng Tàu city. Let’s explore right away to see what makes the outstretched arms of Christ in Vũng Tàu so appealing.
Where is the outstretched arms of Christ in Vũng Tàu located?
The outstretched arms of Christ is located on the top of Núi Nhỏ or also known as Tao Phùng mountain, in Ward 2, Vũng Tàu city, Bà Rịa – Vũng Tàu province. Situated at an altitude of 136 meters above sea level, this famous Vũng Tàu tourist spot is also located on a mountain with the Vũng Tàu lighthouse, but on two different peaks, the lighthouse is on a higher peak. Standing at 32 meters tall, with the outstretched arms spanning 18.4 meters, the outstretched arms of Christ in Vũng Tàu is considered the largest outstretched arms of Christ in Vietnam and the largest in the Asia region today. This Vũng Tàu tourist spot is also seen as a symbol of the coastal city and is a must-visit place for many tourists when traveling to Vũng Tàu.
History of the construction process of the outstretched arms of Christ in Vũng Tàu
In 1972, the parish of Vung Tau began the construction of a statue of Jesus at Nghinh Phong Cape. However, by 1974, due to some reasons, the statue had to be dismantled and moved to a new construction site at Nho Mountain (Tao Phung). The first phase of the project was completed in 1975. In 1992, the project was renovated and the second phase of construction began. However, due to its location on the 176m high Tao Phung Mountain above sea level, close to the coast, and exposed to harsh weather conditions with strong winds and intense sunlight, the Vung Tau Christ the King statue had to be redesigned in terms of structure and scale compared to the original design in 1972.
According to Cuong’s Vung Tau travel guide, the statue of Jesus Christ, compared to the original design, underwent many changes to adapt to the harsh weather conditions, intense sunlight, and strong winds on the peak of Nho Mountain. During the renovation of the statue of Christ, a large-scale construction system built by the French at the end of the 19th century was discovered. This system includes 7 bunkers, each 7m long and 4m wide. Inside, there are 2 cannons, now displayed on the way up to the statue for tourists to visit. The statue was polished smooth after completion. According to the process, the workers would polish from the top down and remove the scaffolding as they progressed. An elderly priest took advantage of the scaffolding not being fully removed to climb up and kiss the face of Christ. He was the first and only person to receive this blessing up to the present time. Construction materials for the project were transported from various locations across the country. Marble was transported from the Non Nuoc region of Da Nang city. While rocks and sand were transported from Dong Nai province. White cement was imported from abroad. During the construction of the Vung Tau Christ the King statue, the construction team faced a major challenge, which was how to transport thousands of tons of materials from the foot of the mountain to the peak. Additionally, the team encountered difficulties in digging the foundation, as there was already a very solid underground system built by the French on the mountain top. However, all challenges were overcome and resolved. Finally, in 1994, the Christ the King statue complex on Tao Phung Mountain was officially inaugurated.
On January 18, 1993, the Vung Tau Christ the King statue was recognized as a national historical-cultural relic. With its unique design and grand scale, on May 15, 2006, the Vietnam Record Center and Dam Sen Cultural Company awarded this statue the record of the “Largest Jesus Christ Statue in Vietnam.”
On January 9, 2012, the Vietnam Record Center (VietKings) officially announced the 10 record events of Vietnam in 2012, in which the “Christ the King Statue (Vung Tau)” was confirmed as the “Largest Christ Statue.”
How tall is the Vung Tau Christ the King statue?
Through several interruptions and design changes, when the Statue of Christ with outstretched arms in Vung Tau was officially inaugurated, it had a total height of 32m, with a total length of both outstretched arms being 18.4m. The statue is placed on a pedestal carved with the image of Jesus along with 12 apostles.Inside the statue, a spiral staircase of 133 steps leads from the base to the two outstretched arms. The interior space of the statue can accommodate over 100 visitors. Each outstretched arm has enough space for 3 to 5 visitors to stand and admire the view at the same time.
The specific height and overall scale of the Statue of Christ with outstretched arms in Vung Tau have set many records nationally and internationally. Itinerary to visit the statue of Jesus with outstretched arms in Vung Tau
In this visit to the statue of Jesus with outstretched arms in Vung Tau, Cuong chose a hotel very close to this tourist spot in Vung Tau, so it only takes a 5-minute walk to reach the entrance to the area of the statue of Jesus with outstretched arms. For those driving, park your vehicle at the parking lot near the entrance, parking here is free, and the amount you contribute is voluntary, and will be used for the maintenance of the statue in the future.
To reach the top to admire the statue of Christ at this tourist spot, we have to climb 811 steps to reach the foot of the statue of Christ, then continue to climb another 133 spiral steps inside the statue of Christ to reach the arms of Christ for the view. Let’s start the journey with Cuong.
The journey to the hands of the statue of Jesus begins with conquering Tao Phung Mountain, as Cuong just mentioned above, the path up has 811 steps and is 176m high. Cuong has only climbed 50 steps and is already a bit tired. It’s true that office workers who sit in air-conditioned rooms and lack physical activity become weak. Take a short break and then continue step by step, along the way there are many places to rest, the first stop has water, coffee, hats, slippers, souvenirs provided by the nuns of the Holy Cross congregation, so if you feel tired when climbing up here, stop by for a rest, have a drink, and then continue the journey to visit the statue of Jesus with outstretched arms. Every 100 steps, there are stone benches to rest, so when you feel tired, take a break immediately to regain strength. There are many flowers on both sides of the path, so you can stop and take some sparkling photos for yourself.
After a while, Cuong has caught up with the climbing process, climbing 100 steps and resting for 5 minutes, everything runs smoothly, every 50 steps there is a count of the steps climbed, complete information is provided about the climbing process in a very professional manner, so Cuong feels very reassured when climbing a mountain like this for the first time. After 30 minutes, Cuong also reached step 800, the feet of the statue of Jesus with outstretched arms were right in front of Cuong. Cuong walked around to explore and saw around the feet of the statue there were stone benches for gueststraveling to Vung Tau to rest after climbing and feeling tired at the rest stops along the way. These rest stops are built at very beautiful viewpoints towards Vung Tau sea. So while resting, you can admire the vast, wide Vung Tau sea, enjoy the cool breeze blowing from the sea, watch the boats moving offshore… very relaxing and comfortable.Cuong also observed that at the base of the statue’s feet are statues depicting Jesus giving the keys to St. Peter, the relief sculpture “The Last Supper,” and Jesus being crucified. Below that is a white statue of the grieving Virgin Mary, a famous statue considered to be Michelangelo’s depiction of the Virgin Mary holding the body of Jesus. In addition, under the statue’s feet, in the area of the statue of Jesus with outstretched arms, there are some ancient cannons. The lifespan of these cannons is over a century. These cannons were originally part of the Nui Nho artillery fortifications built by the French at the end of the 19th century, beginning of the 20th century. After visiting the statue of Jesus with outstretched arms, tourists can learn about these cannons to see a part of the ups and downs of history.
Energy has been restored, now is the time to climb up to the statue of Christ the Redeemer, walking around to the back of the entrance there is a man guarding, he asks to leave everything behind: water bottles, slippers,… so Cuong asked his accompanying friends to hold on and then entered. Inside the statue is a spiral staircase of 133 steps, 32m high from the base to the neck of the statue, the staircase is very narrow, only enough for one person to walk. Oh, Cuong notes to you all, when climbing the stairs, pay attention to keep quiet, calm because we are in the heart of God, so steps must be slow and steady. Just like that, after 5 minutes, Cuong reached the neck of the statue of Christ the Redeemer, began to wait, because the arms can only hold a maximum of 3 people, so those who finish visiting go down before others come up, wait for 10 minutes before it’s your turn, the gate from the neck to the hands of the statue of Christ is very small so you have to bend down to crawl out.
So here we are, everyone, luckily Cuong got to stand on the outermost edge, where the view is the widest, the wind blows strong, cool but a bit scary, the scenery of the sea and the city of Vung Tau harmoniously combined, creating a view that cannot be criticized. The direction of God’s hand is equipped with iron bars to prevent people from climbing up to avoid unfortunate accidents. People stand for more than 5 minutes and then go down, while I linger to admire the view, breathe the air, take photos, and enjoy the reward of conquering this nearly 1000-step journey for over 15 minutes.Standing on the shoulder of God, close your eyes, sincerely pray for peace and goodness. It is said that all your wishes will come true. Then, slowly open your eyes to admire the beautiful nature of the coastal town, enjoy the gentle breeze.Another note for visitors to the Vung Tau Christ Statue is not to wear shorts, tank tops, mini skirts… you should dress modestly and respectfully, otherwise you won’t be allowed to climb up, it’s a waste of effort to climb the stairs tired and in the end not be able to climb up to the hand of Christ.
Descending from Tao Phung mountain, the trip comes to an end.
Then, with the goal achieved, the descent begins. On the way down, people were very obedient to the rules of this solemn place during the peak hours, but were startled by a couple arguing loudly over holding their child on the narrow staircase, shouting and being impolite, disrupting the deserved tranquility. Very disappointed with the behavior in this public place. The descent was much more difficult as there were many people going up, crowding the staircase. The staircase was only wide enough for one person, so going down required maneuvering around each other. After 5 minutes, we reached the foot of the statue, had some water, packed our things and headed back down the mountain. The descent was effortless, taking only 10 minutes to reach the bottom, where we had an ice cream before heading back to the hotel. It can be said that the journey to the statue of the outstretched arms of Christ was Cuong’s first successful mountain climbing experience.
