When traveling to Sapa and have visited familiar places like the stone church, Ham Rong mountain, if you don’t know where to go next, Cuong will suggest you a tourist destination near Sapa town, very easy to reach with plenty of picturesque spots, rich cultural identity, and famous specialties. Where could be so magical? That is Cat Cat Sapa village.

1. Where is Cat Cat Sapa village located?

sapa_6

From the center of Sapa town, following the road towards Fansipan mountain for about 3km, you will reach Cat Cat village. Cat Cat village is located in San Sa Ho commune, Sapa district, Lao Cai province, where many ethnic Hmong people live. Compared to other villages like Ta Van, Ta Phin, Cat Cat is closer to Sapa town, only 3 km away and easier to reach. That’s why Cat Cat attracts many visitors to explore during their Sapa trip.

The village is named Cat Cat because in the early 20th century, the French discovered the magnificent beauty of this place and chose it as a resort for high-ranking officials. The French named this place Cat Cat because there is a very beautiful waterfall in the village called CatScat in French.

sapa_31

This is also a famous destination to admire beautiful snow in Sapa today, with misty clouds, and white snow covering a whole area creating a fairyland amidst the human world.

5. Once you arrive at Cat Cat village in Sapa, let’s explore with Cuong!

sapa_12

After passing through the gate leading to Cat Cat village, you will walk through a stone-paved road to enter the village. On both sides of the road are rows of stalls selling handicrafts. The H’Mong people are very honest, not deceitful, they sell their goods without using aggressive sales tactics, and their invitations are very normal, not overly insistent like in other tourist areas. Their simple and sincere invitations will leave an impression on you.

sapa_14

Each successive step leads down to small thatched cottages. Here, you can stop to take photos, capturing the panoramic view of the valley from above. Along the way, there are many cultural houses, preserved to recreate the daily life and activities for tourists to gain a better understanding of the Hmong people. All are made of wood, leaves, and earth, making you more interested in this place, feeling like stepping into a real house of the ethnic people.

sapa_11

Next, there is a slightly sloping hill with a flower garden, passing through the gate leads to this area. There, you can capture the panoramic view of the valley, which is extremely beautiful. The flowers with various colors are suitable for photography and admiring the beautiful scenery. There is also a hanging bridge, a hut resembling a windmill, where many photos are preserved as memories of the journey to explore Cat Cat village.

sapa_21

Following the steep stone path down, after more than a hundred stone steps, you will hear the sound of rushing water. Stepping down below, you will see a stream of pure white water flowing vigorously. During the rainy season, the water may appear slightly murky due to soil erosion, but it still captivates you. If you want to capture the panoramic view of the waterfall, you should stand from a high point to capture the entire flow of the waterfall. Or capture the image on the bridge crossing both sides, trying to include the two ends of the waterfall to make the photo even more beautiful.

sapa_35

Next to that, you can walk to the area in the middle of the waterfall along a rugged bamboo path to take photos with 3 wooden water mills. However, you should be careful because this path can be slippery when wet and the water flowing down from the waterfall can make it very slippery. On that day, Cuong saw many people renting traditional ethnic costumes and skillfully climbing up to the middle of these bamboo bridges to take photos. The scene was truly picturesque with the 3 giant water mills, the swaying bamboo bridges over the Hoa stream, the rushing water down the rocks below creating a majestic natural landscape, overall very impressive. Visiting Cat Cat village without taking photos in this area would truly be a waste of the whole trip!

sapa_38

Cat Cat Village has nearly 80 households, mostly located along the stone steps in the village, with some scattered on the mountain slopes. The central area of Cat Cat Village, which is also a popular spot for young people to take trendy photos, is where three streams converge day and night: Tien Sa stream, Gold stream, and Silver stream, along with the roaring Cat Cat waterfall (also known as Tien Sa waterfall) with its white foamy water. Next to the waterfall, there are two suspension bridges, Si bridge and A Lu bridge, attracting many tourists to admire the scenery and take memorable photos.

sapa_44

The Cat Cat waterfall flows straight down from top to bottom. The water flows strongly, shooting small streams of water near the standing area. If you are a nature lover, enjoy a little mischief, you will have beautiful photos here. This waterfall was discovered by the French and named CatScat waterfall.

sapa_32

Furthermore, this waterfall is also known by the name Fairy Waterfall. To explain this name, let’s explore a folklore story preserved and told by the local people with Cuồng. In the past, near the waterfall, there were fairies living, and according to another legend, on beautiful moonlit nights, fairy maidens descended here to bathe and wash their hair, hence the name Fairy Waterfall.

sapa_27

Stepping up from the waterfall, you will see a small house specifically used for organizing cultural performances. There are about 6 performances organized for tourists to visit and admire each day. Here, Mông girls and boys perform ethnic cultural arts similar to the cultural house performances at Ham Rong Mountain.

sapa

This house used to be a place where the French colonialists vacationed and built a hydroelectric dam. Immersing yourself in the dances and music here will bring a joyful atmosphere to all tourists when visiting Cat Cat village. You can join in the traditional Sapa dance with the young H’Mong men and women.

After the silver cools down, they take it out and use a hammer to shape it, forging it into various sizes and shapes such as long, short, square, triangle, round, flat, or pulling it into threads. Next, they smooth it out and if decoration is needed, they use nails to engrave patterns, creating raised or sunk designs before shaping the final product.
